After deploying a 1:1 computer initiative, Yorkville Community Unit School District 115 in Illinois was faced with concerns from parents and community members regarding how students’ digital usage would be monitored. Today’s digital native students have a knack for circumventing rules, blocks, and other systems put in place for their own good, which left many feeling uneasy.

“We started looking for software that could monitor the email and document collaboration taking place in Google Docs,” said Director of Technology Ryan Adkins. Yorkville CUSD 115 turned to Gaggle and have found that both the software and customer service support meet their needs. “We understood how we wanted the software to work and how we felt it should work, and Gaggle checked all of those boxes,” says Adkins.

Initially, the focus was on preventing cyberbullying and monitoring students’
accounts for profanity and inappropriate images in Google Drive. However, the
district soon realized the platform went beyond knowing what students are doing
on their Google accounts—it can save lives. Since implementing Gaggle, the
district has been alerted to about six different instances of legitimate
concern that it may have otherwise been unaware of. Says Adkins, “There are
students who are alive today because of Gaggle.”

With the platform, administrators are able to quickly intervene and get students the help they need. “We are fortunate to be able to get immediate emergency assistance for students in crisis after being notified of issues through Gaggle alerts,” said Adkins. “If you were to cut my budget tomorrow and tell me that I can only have one piece of software in place,” he adds, “10 out of 10 times, I'd say it would have to be Gaggle.” Read the case study to learn more about how Yorkville CUSD 115 keeps students safe using Gaggle.
