Chief Thomas Y. Trawick

Chief Thomas Y. Trawick, Jr. (Ret.) is the former Chief of Safety and Security for Clayton County Public Schools where he recently retired on June 30, 2022. He was responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all activities of the Police Department. His duties consisted of, but were not limited to, the enforcement of Clayton County Public School District policies, state laws and ordinances; the prevention and deterrence of crimes and criminal acts; the investigation of traffic offenses in the district school zones; protection of life and liberty of the children, faculty, staff, and constituents of the district. Chief Trawick was formerly an adjunct instructor for Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he taught classes in the disciplines of criminal justice and justice administration. Prior to those assignments, he was the Chief of Police and Director of Emergency Management for Clark Atlanta University. He was responsible for the administrative duties of the Department as well as the University’s Emergency Action and Management Plan. He was the administrator of the plan which encompassed Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery for natural and man-made disasters. Lastly, but not least, he was Chief Investigator for the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office, Eastern Judicial Circuit, in Savannah, Georgia. He was responsible for developing, evaluating, and implementing the Investigative Bureau’s goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Thomas Y. Trawick, Jr. is a veteran of the armed forces (Army and Air Force National Guard) and a retiree from the 165th Georgia Air National Guard. On May 31, 2005, he retired after proudly serving for 22 years. He was assigned to the Transportation Section where he worked in the capacity of a Fleet Manager and ascertained the rank of Master Sergeant. He deployed to numerous locations including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Panama, Germany, and Costa Rica. He earned numerous medals, including: the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Southeast Asia Service Ribbon, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. Thomas Y. Trawick, Jr. was born in Tuskegee, Alabama and graduated from Tuskegee Institute High School in 1981. After graduation, he attended Tuskegee Institute University for two years and then enlisted into the United States Army on August 1983. After serving for over six years, he exited the Army to complete his education and joined the Chatham County Police Department. He subsequently earned a Master of Public Administration from Columbus State University in December 2008. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from Saint Leo University in 1997 and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Transportation from the Community College of the Air Force. Thomas Y. Trawick, Jr. is married and is heavily involved in his community.
