Gaggle Press Releases

Bloomington, IL (March 28, 2018) – Gaggle announced today the release of an important add-on to its popular Safety Management for G Suite solution and support for the Canvas learning management system.

School districts that use G Suite for Education from Google now can safely allow their students to use Hangouts. Gaggle’s algorithms reveal potentially harmful content in Hangouts Chat, and trained professionals evaluate suspicious content, alerting school officials of unsafe situations even contacting local law enforcement when time is of the essence.

"School leaders have told us that they turn off Hangouts because of safety concerns, but there are so many benefits to allowing students to use real-time messaging," said Sara Seba, Senior Product Manager at Gaggle. "It's one of the ways students communicate today."

Students can safely use Hangouts for project collaboration, live class discussions, peer mentoring, virtual office hours, foreign language practice and online study groups. Also, Google Hangouts provides a way for coaches and teachers to direct message their players and students, eliminating the need to share personal phone numbers.

"There are endless opportunities for students to use tools like Hangouts," said Bryan Phillips, Chief Technology Officer, Hoover City Schools in Alabama, "but as we provide our students with access to G Suite for Education, we're responsible for keeping them safe. Gaggle continues to be a partner in those efforts."

In addition to announcing support for Google Hangouts Chat, Gaggle now offers Safety Management for the Canvas learning management system (LMS). Safety Management for Canvas supports Conversations, Discussions, Files and Pages.

"Teachers cannot browse through most student content in email and file storage within Canvas, which could lead to student safety concerns like cyberbullying," said Seba. "To allow students to use Canvas’ full set of digital tools, school leaders should make sure they are safe."

Suspicious activity inside of Canvas is reviewed by Gaggle’s trained Safety Team, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Gaggle contacts school and district administrators only when it uncovers serious or life-threatening situations; allowing educators to focus on what’s important while keeping students safe.

Similar to Safety Management for G Suite and Safety Management for Office 365, school or district administrators have access to an interactive dashboard for insight into incidents and to help keep students on track when using Canvas.
