Creating a New State

The 6 Super Deaf Power class (7/8 grade) are recreating politics as it was back in 1781.  The task was for teams of students to create their own states.  Students were divided into teams and given some background information on their state.  They created a state name, motto, rights and rules of their state. They also wrote a state song.  Next week they will try to conduct business and solve problems as they but follow the criteria set by the Articles of the Confederation.  The following blogs are excerpts of their work.

This Week in Social Studies

Every morning the dolphins greet each other and talk about how they feel.  They share their activities using vocabulary:  yesterday, today and tomorrow. They watch each other and turn-take appropriately.

The 6 SDP are working on their post American Revolution states.  Divided into teams they created a state name, flag and money.  They created state rights and rules to support those rights.

Money Talks

What can money tell us about a country?  This is one question students explored this week.  Students looked at the coins I brought back with me from Australia.  They noticed that  Queen Elizabeth's portrait was on the front of each coin.  They determined that Australia had ties to Britian.  The back of each coin had images of a platypus or a kangaroo.  An image of an aboriginal man was on the back of a$2.00 coin.  All of these images gave students information about life in Australia.
